Yes Katie, i m interested to know more n also would like to taste the fuchow dishes. Also keen to learn this dialect.

Katie Foong: Wah, great! Are you a Foochow?

Helen Loo: No I m a hokkien.

Katie Foong: So interesting to trace back the roots. I went Fuzhou twice, the people there speak like the Foochows in Sitiawan, loud and clear, haha! Modern Foochows in Malaysia do not speak so loud now.

Helen Loo: During the olden days those coffee shops in Singapore r operated by the fuchow . They can make very nice traditional coffee. My brother's wife is a fuchow n her father opened coffee shop in Singapore

Katie Foong: yes. It was recorded in History- in the Year 1901, that the Foochow, being very hard working people, braved the rough seas and unknown living conditions in Malaya ( known at that time) started their adventure in a foreign land. Singapore was then also a targeted island to land. Of course, life at that time was not easy, most of them started by doing hard work, ‘open’ up the jungles and started to plant crops. After they have accumulated enough, they would go back to their 3 basic and well known skill/ trade, e.g. tailor, barber and coffee shop operator. Many of them learn their trade the hard way, without any salary but work as a helper if not slave to the shop owner. Every cent they earn then was through hard work and sweat. This is why we see so many coffee shops operated by Foochow people. Many Foochow man Barber and tailor.
